Ethical Standards for Case Management Practice-Part II: Practice Considerations for the CCMC Standards for Professional Conduct

Case managers practicing in various care settings across the continuum of health and human services are usually from diverse professional backgrounds. Despite their education, credentials, professional disciplines and organizational structure, policies and procedures, they have one thing in common: the practice of case management. This includes ethical practice.

If these case managers possess the certified case manager credential offered by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC), they are held to the same ethical standards: CCMC’s code of ethics and professional conduct. This section explains important and practical considerations about ethical standards for the case manager with practical tips for application.

Having a clearly articulated and agreed upon code of ethics and professional conduct allows professionals involved in the field of case management to provide their clients with healthcare services and resources that adhere to ethical standards.

When case managers adhere to a code of ethics, such as CCMC’s code, they are better able to safeguard the public’s interest including those of the clients/support systems they serve. They also protect the interests of their fellow professionals.
